Reading Guide | The Fourth Trimester

This is a beautiful book with a wealth of knowledge that you can draw from as you define what your postpartum doula practice will look like. The premise of this book is that there is a fourth trimester - a three month period after a baby is born in which a parent and baby are still evolving and transitioning. We will explore this book, it's limitations, and grow as postpartum doulas.

Understanding Perinatal Mental Health

Postpartum doulas are certainly not perinatal mental health experts (unless you are!), but we are in a position to truly be world changers here. Doulas - birth and postpartum - are often the only providers involved in an individuals perinatal experience who enter their home and build a relationship that is not contingent upon any aspect of their process, other than becoming parents. By understanding some basics of perinatal mental health, you may recognize changes or warning signs in your clients. You can be a bridge to further care. And that can mean a world of difference!

Infant Attachment

What is infant attachment, attachment styles, and why do they matter? In this session we will work through these ideas and how you as a doula and support secure infant attachment.

Infant Sleep

Sleep:
  • the dream of new parents.
  • the answer to so many of the grown-up struggles of the postpartum period.
  • one of the most difficult things to navigate as a parent.
  • the thing infants never seem to do enough of (for us).

The resources in this section will help you to have a better understanding of infant development and how we can help our clients get a little more needed sleep. Sleep will help our clients heal physically and emotionally, and be better able to care for their babies.

Crying and Parental Pressures

Let's explore some of the pressures new parents feel.  They are told if they have the right accessory, the right pacifier, the right bouncer, the right sleeper, hold their babies enough, keep them upright long enough, perfect the balance of tummy time and naps, feed their baby perfectly . . . . their babies won't cry and will grow up to be perfect little humans - heroes and superstars. Here we will dive into some of our ideas about parenting and crying, do some myth debunking, and checkout what we really know.
